Serendipitous day
go with the flow
I had the most lovely day today (Thursday).
It started with a non-stress test for the baby (routine when you’re “of advanced maternal age” or have a “geriatric pregnancy” like myself). The nurse who conducted the test was the niece of a dear friend of my mom’s who was also my elementary school librarian. We bonded over both having grown up in Pacific Grove and loving this area. She also had this beautiful calm presence about her that quelled my anxiety for my impending delivery…at least temporarily.
Then I went to get my hair cut—trying someone new and chopping off my hair before the baby comes and it turns out the hair stylist is my neighbor! We share a fence to both of our backyards. She is Persian and was so lovely and I look forward to taking Giovanni over to visit with her. She has a beautiful hibiscus tree in her garden that spills into our backyard. I love to watch the hummingbirds flock to it and it has been full of fuchsia flowers since we moved in.
Then I went to get my nails done and the woman who sat next to me was also pregnant. Not only that but she is a student at the Naval Postgraduate School (where I work). We bonded over pregnancy and maternity and anxieties and not having a community (I have a community but she does not, her husband lives and works in Florida while she is a student here and her family is all in Indiana). I gave her my phone number and told her to text me any questions she had. We have been going back and forth on mom and pregnancy stuff all day now.
And then I had lunch with my former boss and dear friend and it was so nice to catch up with her and talk about her current projects and my life. Not to mention sharing a good meal in good company is one of life’s greatest pleasures. Which I look forward to enjoying much more of after I deliver and can enjoy a lot of other things that you can’t when you are growing a human. I’m not talking about only sushi and booze, I’m talking about not having indigestion and acid reflux and having your insides smashed by a tiny human. I wouldn’t trade it for the world but it is uncomfortable.
Happy Friday, beautiful souls, I hope you are enjoying life and are open to serendipitous moments like talking to strangers and finding out how connected you are or what you have in common.

Very uplifting! When are you due?
